Dmitri and Lea, SOL’s hosts, cheek to cheek on a rocky summit above a wide forested valley

Dmitri & Lea

We built the house we kept looking for: comfort, serenity and sustainability under one roof.

Dmitri designed and built SOL between 2022 and 2023, on an old hayfield in New Kingston. Lea co-hosts. Between the two of us we look after every stay, from the first message to checkout.

The SOL way

Solar first. Built for slowing down.

“Very warm place (temperature wise) - no drafts.”

SOL’s 42-panel ground-mounted solar array on the meadow
Energy42solar panels

A 42-panel, 17.85 kW array on the meadow is sized to make about 140% of what the house uses in a year. Three Tesla Powerwall batteries — 40.5 kWh — carry the evening, and when storms take the lines down, the essentials keep running on stored sunlight. The Level 2 EV charger by the garage is free for guests.

Water600+ ftprivate well

SOL draws its water from a private well more than 600 feet deep, inside the New York City watershed — protected land that feeds the reservoirs of the city.

HeatRadiantheated floors

Heat loops poured into the slab warm every floor. A wood stove in the great room and a cedar sauna in the spa bath do the rest.

14 tonnes

of CO₂ kept out of the air each year: the same as burning about 1,600 gallons of gasoline, or what 240 tree seedlings take in over ten years of growing.

That’s enough electricity for about two average American homes.

The installer’s estimate of 21,185 kWh a year from the 42-panel, 17.85 kW array, converted at the EPA’s national rates (Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator); average home use from the U.S. EIA. Upstate New York’s grid is already cleaner than average, so the local offset is smaller. Real output varies with the weather.
